FRESNO – A new partnership between the State Center Community College District (SCCCD) and the Maddy Institute is giving students across the Valley hands-on experience in government and public service.
With this development, students from Fresno City College, Reedley College, Madera Community College and Clovis Community College will have similar opportunities as their peers from state schools, such as Fresno State and UC Merced, to pursue paid political and public service internships through the Maddy Institute.
“Internships through the Maddy Institute will provide students with firsthand experience in government, public policy and civic engagement,” said SCCCD Chancellor Carole Goldsmith in a press release. “These internships will help students build relationships with policymakers and staffers in politics and public service, while enhancing their communication, research, writing and problem-solving skills, which are valuable in many careers.
According to the Maddy Institute website, the program supports around 30 students each year throughout the Valley. Interns can take part in various legislative offices such as city council, the governor’s office, U.S. Senate and more.
These internships are open to all majors, but students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, have completed a minimum of 30 units and be available for 10-15 hours a week.
Internship placements ranged from: Bakersfield, Fresno, Hanford, Merced, Modestor, Visalia and Stockton. Placements are made to minimize commuting distances for students.
The deadline to apply for the Summer 2025 Valley Legislative Internship Program for the San Joaquin Valley is March 14.
