PARLIER – An early morning crash in Parlier has resulted in one fatality after a driver’s attempt to pass another car took a south turn.
Three vehicles were involved in a crash on Manning Avenue just before 5 a.m. on Jan. 31. One driver died at the scene. Another driver was transported to Community Regional Medical Center with major injuries. The third driver was not injured.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), at approximately 4:55 a.m., Samuel Sanchez, 25, of Reedley, was driving westbound on Manning Avenue. The CHP report said Sanchez was driving at a high rate of speed in the left lane. Sanchez was driving a 2020 Jeep Cherokee.
Guillermo Contreras, 24, of Selma, was also driving westbound in the left lane. Contreras was driving a 2018 Honda Civic. An unidentified driver in a 2010 Honda Accord was approaching in the eastbound direction on Manning Avenue in the right lane.
Sanchez moved into the right lane to pass Contreras. After passing Contreras, Sanchez moved back into the left lane. The left rear of the Jeep clipped the front of the Civic. Sanchez lost control and overturned on the center divider. The Jeep tumbled into the eastbound lane, where it struck the Accord.
The Accord driver was not wearing a seatbelt and died on the scene. The Jeep caught fire. Sanchez was able to crawl out and was pulled to safety by Contreras. Sanchez sustained moderate to major injuries. Contreras was not injured.
CHP said it does not believe alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident, pending toxicology results.
