REEDLEY – Reedley College’s baseball team remains unbeaten for the month of March, sweeping three non-conference contests from Modesto Junior College last week to run its win streak to six games.

The Tigers (16-6, 6-3 Central Valley Conference) cracked double figures in all three games with the Pirates (15-5, 5-1 Big 8 Conference), beginning with a 10-6 decision at RC Diamond on March 12. That was followed by an 11-4 victory in Modesto on March 14 and finally a 24-11 beatdown in Reedley on March 16.

Designated hitter Colin Rios (Bullard HS, Fresno) drove in three runs while catcher Garrett Garfield (Clovis HS) doubled and singled to drive in two runs to pace a nin-hit RC attack. Five Reedley pitchers combined to limit the potent Pirates offense to seven hits and six earned runs.

In the road victory, sophomore pitcher Will Gagnon (Reedley High) scattered six hits in seven innings allowing two earned runs while striking out nine and walking two in running his record to 5-1. Brody Block (Redwood, Visalia) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Finally, the Tigers erupted for eight runs in the second and seven more in the fourth to cap off the sweep.

Dusty Vela (Pleasant Valley, Chico) homered and went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Rios was 3-for-5 and knocked in five runs while scoring twice. Nine different Tiger pitchers worked by committee to preserve innings, with Jobe Olson (2-2) getting the win.

Reedley College has three CVC games with Taft College this week, hosting the Cougars on March 19 and Saturday, March 23 (2 p.m.) and playing at Taft in a 2 p.m. start on Thursday, March 21. The Tigers host Bakersfield College in a 1 p.m. non-conference game on Tuesday, March 26, then travel to Kern County for a single contest March 27.

Strong pitching carries RC softball team

Reedley College limited its three opponents to six total runs in three victories last week, improving the Tigers’ record to 12-6 on the season and 5-2 in Central Valley Conference play. Reedley also has won five straight since getting blanked 9-0 by College of the Sequoia on March 7.

Reedley first downed visiting Porterville College (1-16) 7-1 on March 12, as three pitchers teamed to limit the Pirates to two hits. Freshman Trinity Sanchez (Reedley High) worked four hitless innings while striking out eight. Hope Ficher and Nissa Gonzalez each drove in two runs while Abigelle Buchanan had three of the team’s 14 hits.

In Saturday’s 5-2, 4-3 non-conference doubleheader sweep of Shasta College (1-14), pitchers Sanchez and Alexis Wright picked up the decision victories. Anahi Castillo (Orange Cove) and Mia Barbosa (Immanuel, Reedley) collected RBIs in the second win. Reedley collected 11 hits in the opening win; three each by Barbosa and Celine Ramos. Hailee Zapien (DInuba) went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Reedley College plays a scheduled non-conference doubleheader with Ohlone College (March 19) and travels to Merced College for a 2 p.m. CVC game on Thursday, March 21. The Tigers then play at first place Fresno City College (18-5, 4-0) in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23. Games start at 1 and 3 p.m.
