REEDLEY – With limited space remaining, the Reedley Cemetery District is moving forward with an expansion project to address future burial needs.
“All of our availability (that is left) is behind our office,” said officials at the Reedley Cemetery District office. “Eventually, that is going to run out.”
However, that space will not run out immediately. Officials said there are roughly 200 burial spots behind the office. But other burial spaces in the cemetery are being used or have been sold.
“One through six, sold,” said the District. “Serenity Park in the back – sold. We do have spaces in the veterans’ section, but that section is only for veterans and their spouses.”
The District said the project has been in the works since 2014. The expansion adds 11 acres to the cemetery. The District is still working out the logistics on how many spaces the expansion will provide.
Grading on the land began two weeks ago. Phase two involves laying down the roads. There is no set project completion date.
“We still have to do the landscaping and the design and things of that sort,” said the District.
In the meantime, burials will continue as usual.
“We’re kind of tippy toeing around services because we can’t not do them,” said the District.
