REEDLEY – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating an incident in which a pedestrian died after being hit by two vehicles.
According to a CHP press release, the incident occurred at approximately 8:35 p.m. on April 21 along Manning Avenue east of Englehardt Avenue, just outside of Reedley. The pedestrian, identified as Reedley resident Gurminder Singh, 31, was walking in the eastbound lane of Manning when he was hit.
Singh was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) in Fresno by Skylife Helicopter, where he later died from major injuries sustained in the crashes. CHP is awaiting toxicology results for Singh but at this time does not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collison.
The initial investigation has determined that the driver of a Hyundai Elantra, identified as a 22-year-old woman, was traveling eastbound on Manning, approaching Singh’s location. The driver did not see Singh in time to avoid a crash due to dark roadway conditions.
The press release said that after the initial impact, Singh came to rest in the eastbound lane of Manning, at which time a second vehicle — a Honda Accord driven by a 27-year-old woman — traveling eastbound was also unable to stop in time and struck Singh in the roadway.
CHP said that despite lifesaving efforts, Singh died from his injuries at the hospital.
Fresno CHP Cmdr. Ian Holguin said in the press release that all road users should be reminded to exercise heightened awareness when driving, particularly in rural areas with limited lighting and visibility.
“Whether you’re driving or walking, always remain alert — rural roads can be especially dangerous at night,” Holguin said. “Reflective clothing, headlights and vigilance save lives.”
