VISALIA – Health professionals and students across the Central Valley have an opportunity to learn from experts on the developments in bioethics and public health at an upcoming conference.

On Friday, Oct. 17, renowned bioethics authority Thaddeus Mason Pope is headlining the third annual Central Valley Regional Bioethics Conference at Valley Children’s Hospital. Joining him is Denise Dudzinski, a professor of bioethics, humanities and palliative care at the University of Washington

According to an announcement from Kaweah Health, discussions will include topics pertaining to the top 10 legal developments in bioethics and public health at the upcoming Central Valley Regional Bioethics Conference. Pope’s presentations will also cover conflict resolution strategies in intensive care and advance directives for voluntary stopping of eating and drinking (VSED) in dementia care.

Professor Dudzinski will present on navigating emotionally challenging clinical encounters. Together, both will close out the event in a joint Q&A session.

Bioethics is the interdisciplinary study of ethical, legal and social issues arising from advances in the life sciences, health care and technology. As noted in the announcement, the field seeks to clarify the values at stake, as well as influence change through guidelines and policies, addressing questions about life, death and the human body in the face of rapid scientific progress.

The day-long conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by Kaweah Health, Community Health System, Valley Children’s Hospital and Kaiser Permanente. For general admission, registration is $75 and $25 for students.
