SANGER – After a round of appointments announced by Governor Gavin Newsom, a medical sociologist from Sanger is continuing to help lead the region toward better air quality.
Announced on Feb. 11, Tania Pacheco-Werner has been reappointed to the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, where she has served since 2020. Pacheco-Werner, a Democrat, will need to be confirmed by the Senate, and there is no compensation.
The Valley Air District, as it is otherwise known, is governed by a board of 15 members, including Board of Supervisors representatives from the district’s eight counties, one health and science member appointed by the governor, one physician appointed by the governor and five Valley city representatives.
Outside of her role in the district, Pacheco-Werner has been the executive director of Fresno State’s Central Valley Health Policy Institute since 2021. Before that, she served in several roles beginning in 2015, including postgraduate fellow, research scientist, co-assistant director and co-director.
From 2011-2017, Pacheco-Werner was also a consultant in training at Visions Inc. During that same time, she worked as a lecturer in Fresno State’s sociology department from 2011-2016. In 2013, she was a diocesan administrator at the Diocese of San Joaquin.
Pacheco-Werner’s ties to Fresno State also extend to her education, having earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the university. She also earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from UC San Francisco.
Pacheco-Werner is also a member of the California Air Resources board.
Other appointments announced by Newsom include: Paula Stigler Granados of San Diego to the California Air Resources Board, Julie Lee of Auburn to the Delta Stewardship Council, Ann Patterson of Sacramento to the Delta Stewardship Council and Monique Moyer of San Mateo to the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority.
