DINUBA – A police officer and an individual were wounded in Dinuba on Thursday night when a call about a disturbance at a residence resulted in a shooting between a subject and the responding officers.
The Dinuba Police Department said both individuals were transported to a local hospital. The officer, identified as a sergeant with more than 20 years of law enforcement service, is in stable condition, while the other individual, identified as Luis Manuel Piceno, 29, is in critical condition.
The shooting transpired after Dinuba police dispatched officers to a residence in the 100 block of South I Street — just north of Dinuba High School — shortly after 8 p.m. on Jan. 18. The department said they received a call about an unwanted male subject in possession of a firearm and causing a disturbance.
“While attempting to communicate with the subject and give him verbal commands, he produced a firearm and shot at the responding officers, striking one,” the department said. “The officers on scene returned fire, striking the subject.”
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office has been requested to take over the investigation, and all Dinuba police officers involved in the shooting will be put on paid administrative leave.
Dinuba High School operations were not impacted by the incident or processing of the scene.
