SANGER – A Sanger man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after he contacted the Sanger Police Department and confessed to repeatedly stabbing his father.

According to a department press release issued just after 1 p.m., SPD announced it had arrested Gilbert Canales, 41, at the Fast Trip gas station on Academy Avenue in Sanger. According to the post, Canales entered the gas station at 2:30 a.m. and asked to use the bathroom. When he failed to emerge, an employee called the Sanger Police Department around 3 a.m.

Police arrived to find Canales still locked inside the bathroom. When he failed to respond, officers forced their way inside. They located Canales, whose clothing was stained with blood. Canales subsequently informed the officers he had killed his father.

After Canales was taken into custody, Sanger Police Department performed a welfare check at a residence located in the 1800 block of Diamond Avenue. When they looked through the windows, they observed a person lying motionless on the floor.

Officers forced entry into the house. They discovered an adult male, later identified as Roel Canales, 80. The elder Canales was unresponsive. He had sustained multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives are heading up the investigation. This is the city’s first homicide of the year and the first since November 2023.

Canales remains in custody. He is charged with multiple felonies, including murder. No motive for the crime has been established.
