Maria Gonzalez Acosta

Maria Gonzalez Acosta of Sanger, died on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024. She was 95 years old. Mrs. Gonzalez Acosta was a homemaker. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 6 p.m. at Wallin’s Sanger Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sanger followed by the burial at Sanger Cemetery. Wallin’s Sanger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Francisca Colegio 

Francisca Colegio of Dinuba, died on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024. She was 85 years old. Mrs. Colegio was a homemaker. Visitations will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024 from 4 to 6 p.m. followed by a wake service at 6 p.m. at Farewell Page Funeral Home in Selma. Mass will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Selma at 12 p.m. Graveside service will follow at Selma Cemetery District. Clifford Alan Dias 

Clifford Alan Dias of Riverdale, died on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024. He was 76 years old. Mr. Dias was a mechanic. A Rosary will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Riverdale at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery. Hortencia Garcia

Hortencia Garcia, of Selma died on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024. She was 72 years old. Mrs. Garcia worked in housekeeping for the hospital. Services were held on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024. Farewell Page Funeral Home in Selma is in charge of arrangements.

Jess David Garcia

Jess David Garcia of Orosi, died on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024. He was 44 years old. Visitations will be held on Friday, March 1, 2024 at 11 a.m., Rosary said at 12 p.m. and followed by a funeral Mass at 12:30 p.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Burial will be held at Smith Mountain Cemetery. Mr. Garcia is survived by one daughter, his parents, two sisters and one grandchild. Jesse R. Garcia 

Jesse R. Garcia of Orosi, died on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024. He was 77 years old. Mr. Garcia was a welder. Visitations will be held on Friday, March 1, 2024 at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Dinuba. Rosary will follow at 12 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 12:30 p.m. Burial will be held at Smith Mountain Cemetery. Mr. Garcia is survived by his wife, Connie Garcia, one son, two daughters, one brother, one sister, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Erlaine Gregory

Erlaine Gregory was born May 4, 1925 and passed away Feb. 13 at age 98. She grew up in Dinuba and graduated from Dinuba High School in 1943. During WWII, she served in the WAVES and was stationed at the Alameda Naval Air Station. After the war, she graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara and spent several years in Hanford, before moving to Santa Clara where she would complete 30 years of dedicated, caring, teaching. 

Erlaine Gregory
1925–2024

After retirement in 1984, she returned to her hometown to continue her life of dedication to her family and community. One needed to call and make an appointment to fit a visit into her busy schedule! She served many years as a volunteer at Alta Hospital and served on the Dinuba Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. As a member of the Alta District Historical Society, she was a chairwoman for many home tours and auctions as well as refinishing numerous pieces of antique furniture for the fundraisers. She was a member of the Dinuba Police Department Volunteer Patrol for which her family nicknamed her “Officer Auntie.” In 1988, Erlaine received the Dinuba Senior Citizen award for her outstanding contributions to the community. She enjoyed her years of involvement with her neighbors in Bel Aire Court and as a member of the Dinuba Christian Church which brought great joy.  

Family was extremely important to Erlaine. She and her mother, Dorothy Frew enjoyed many years of traveling in their RV with the Lucky Ones group. After Dorothy passed away, Erlaine continued to travel with her sister, Joanne Ledbetter and the Borne Free RV group.  

She is survived by her sister Joanne Ledbetter of Orosi; her half-sister, Anthonette (Gregory) Housten of Caliente, NV; her nephew Dr. Greg Ledbetter of Drum Valley and his son William of Washington; two nieces, Jill Brown (David) of Orange Cove, and their boys, Andrew (Mandy) of Orange Cove, Adam (Alysha) and Justin of Orosi, and Dr. Laurie Day (John) currently serving a veterinary mission in Mongolia, and their children Austin (Jordan) of Washington, Kaylee (Ryan) and Annabelle (Sam) of Idaho. She will also be dearly missed by numerous great-great nieces and nephews. 

Private services will be held with interment at Smith Mountain Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to the Alta District Historical Society, 289 South K Street, Dinuba, CA.

Nicolas B. Gutierrez 

Nicolas B. Gutierrez of Sanger, died on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024. He was 80 years old. Mr. Gutierrez was an agricultural laborer. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church followed by burial at Sanger Cemetery. Wallin’s Sanger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Louie Hernandez 

Louie Hernandez of Sanger, died on Friday, Feb. 2, 2024. He was 60 years old. Mr. Hernandez was a maintenance mechanic. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Time in Destiny Church in Sanger. Wallin’s Sanger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Richard L. Hicks 

Richard L. Hicks of Orange Cove, passed away on Nov. 22, 2023 at the age of 86. Richard “Gubby” was a lifelong resident of Orange Cove where he served over 20 years as the fire chief for the Orange Cove Fire District before retirement.

1937–2023

He served over 50 years as a volunteer firefighter, first captain of the department, promoted to deputy fire chief, then commissioned as fire chief in 1993 until retirement. Chief Hicks demonstrated a lifelong commitment to serving the city of Orange Cove to promote, preserve and protect the residents of Orange Cove. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard N. Hicks and Winnie Hicks Hill, his wife Pat Hicks, son Richard “Ricky” Hicks, sister Wilma DeFehr, Christine Campbell and brother Everett Joe Hicks. 

He is survived by his brother, Walter “Wally” Hill, nieces Pam Espino, Donna Sandoval, Sandy Hicks, Kristi Zweigle, Bobbie Kremple, Trudi Lindsey and nephew, Tim Campbell. 

A celebration of life was held at a private family graveside service on Dec. 18, 2023 at Smith Mountain Cemetery.

Donald LaRue Hogner

Donald LaRue Hogner of Fresno, died on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024.  He was 86 years old. Mr. Hogner was a chief probation officer. Services were held on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024 at Calvary Fellowship Church in Sanger. Wallin’s Sanger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Felipa Huerta

Felipa Huerta of Orosi, died on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024. She was 75 years old. Mrs. Huerta was a housewife. Visitations will be held on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dinuba Dopkins Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, March 1, 2024, at 9 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Cutler. Burial will be held at Smith Mountain. Mrs. Huerta is survived by her husband, Jorge Lopez, two sons, eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, five brothers and five sisters. Victor O. Mares

Victor O. Mares of Fresno, died on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2024. He was 63 years old. Mr. Mares was a foreman. Visitation was held on Monday, Feb. 26, 2024. Farewell Selma Page Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Ziney McConnell 

Evelyn Ziney McConnell of Fresno, died on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2024. She was 95 years old. A graveside service was held on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024. Farewell Page Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Cecil Monroe McReynolds, Jr. 

Cecil Monroe McReynolds, Jr., of Dunlap, died on Monday, Jan. 22, 2024. He was 80 years old. Mr. McReynolds was a manager. He is survived by his wife, Linda McReynolds, one son, one daughter, four grandchildren and one sister. Dinuba Dopkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Jalmer Nurmi 

Thomas Jalmer Nurmi, born to Kathryn and Arvi Nurmi in Carmel, Calif. on May 23, 1952, finished his tour on Earth on Dec. 4, 2023. He is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Stump and Tricia Iest; his ex-wife and dear friend Barbara Nurmi; two grandchildren, Eliott and Roslyn Iest; two sisters, Mari Paul and Kay Nurmi Dimuro; and his nephew, Tres Dimuro. 

Thomas Jalmer Nurmi
1952–2023

Tom graduated from Reedley High School in 1970. He met Barbara Lingo and wed in 1973. Next, armed with his general contractor’s license, they moved to Palm Springs where he started his own business, Nurmi Construction. He worked throughout his life in both construction and ministry. Seeking out those struggling with drug and alcohol addictions. He found and preached to men who had lost their way, showing them that there was another path; one that led to redemption and fulfillment. 

Tom loved his family, animals, food, bizarre literature and events, music, and God—not necessarily in that order. 

We will celebrate his life at Cruising for Jesus Church, 659 E. Dinuba Ave in Reedley, on March 16, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. Please join us for a feast in his honor, following the service.

Henrietta Figueroa Oliva 

Henrietta Figueroa Oliva, died on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024. She was 93 years old. Mrs. Oliva was a homemaker. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Wallin’s Sanger Funeral Home followed by a burial at the Sanger Cemetery. Jose R. Pena 

Jose R. Pena of Fresno, died on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024. He was 73 years old. Mr. Pena was a bus driver. Visitations will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Dopkins Dinuba Funeral Home.  Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 8 a.m. at Dopkins Dinuba Funeral Home. Burial at Smith Mountain Cemetery. Mr. Pena is survived by his spouse, Ross Geller, two sons, two daughters, 16 grandchildren, one brother and one sister. Joe Ramos

Barbara L. Rodgers
