Harold J. Enns

Harold J. Enns was born in Reedley, California on Dec. 13, 1938, to Jack and Elsie (Unruh) Enns. He lived well, he loved well, he led well. He also fought well, and his 22-year long health struggle came to an end on Feb. 17, 2024.

Harold J. Enns
1938–2024

Harold was educated in Reedley, attending Washington School, followed by General Grant, Immanuel Academy (now Immanuel High School), and Reedley College. He excelled in track and field events and played basketball for both Immanuel and Reedley College. After graduating with an AA degree in 1958, Harold went on to Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, graduating in 1960 with a bachelor’s degree in social science, with an emphasis in history. He earned his master’s degree in social science from Fresno State University, as well as a secondary education teaching credential.

Harold received Jesus Christ as his savior at the age of eight, was baptized at the age of eleven in 1950, and became a lifelong member of the Reedley Mennonite Brethren Church.

He proudly served his country with the U.S. Coast Guard, first on active duty while based in Alameda, California and then as a reservist from 1961 to 1969.

In August 1961, he married the love of his life, Patricia L. Askin. They were married for 62 years and lived most of their married life together in Reedley.

Harold taught and coached at Immanuel High School from 1962 to 1965, then joined the faculty at Fresno Pacific College from 1965 to 1968. At Fresno Pacific, he taught history, economics and government but also became the head track coach and developed the institution’s competitive intercollegiate program. He coached basketball and acted as Dean of Students, as well.

In 1968, Harold and Pat and their growing family moved back to Reedley from Fresno, so that he could join his father, Jack, in the family business. Eventually, Harold would buy Jack’s share of Enns Pontiac, Buick, and GMC and successfully run the business with his cousin and partner, Earl Enns, for another 41 years before they retired and closed the business in 2009. Harold managed the sales side and Earl ran the service department.

In 1970, Harold joined the Reedley Rotary Club. He served as a director of the club and was the founder and director of the annual Rotary-KCUSD Track Meet serving the elementary and junior high schools of Kings Canyon Unified for 50 years. He was also a founding board member of Kings River State Bank.

His greatest passion was serving Jesus and building up the Church. He sat on Mennonite Brethren leadership boards (both locally and nationally) and taught adult Sunday School for many years at Reedley Mennonite Brethren Church. Harold invested a great deal of his energy in Christian higher education, acting as chairman of the Immanuel High School, Fresno Pacific College, and Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary board of directors.

In 2002, Harold was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. After long years of treatment, he achieved remission, but the aftermath of the cancer and chemotherapy left him physically challenged. He bravely shifted from a life of leadership to a life of encouraging, coaching, and praying for others. He attended hundreds of sporting competitions, musical events, graduations, and even three weddings, for his beloved grandchildren. Assisted and inspired by his courageous wife, he traveled throughout the United States vacationing and visiting family. He spent countless hours advising family, friends, neighbors, and fellow leaders who sought out his wisdom.

Although he touched many lives in his 85 years, his greatest admirers and biggest fans were his loving wife, his three daughters, his three sons-in-law and his seven grandchildren. In addition to his wife Pat, he is survived by his daughters, Sandy Long (Chris), Judi Szpor (Bill) and Sharol DeGroot (Mike); grandchildren Elisabeth Long Esposito (Michael), Susannah Long Conner (Michael) , William Szpor (Corrin), Samuel Szpor, Nicholas Szpor (Karissa), Karlee DeGroot, and Kolbi DeGroot, as well as five great grandchildren – CJ, Loren, Peter, Leighton and Adrienne. He is also survived by his three siblings and lifelong friends Robert Enns (Ruth), Eleanor Brandt (Wayne) and Ken Enns (Jan).

The family would like to thank Dr. Chris Perkins for acting as Harold’s oncologist and cheerleader for over twenty years.

Donations in his memory may be made to Immanuel Schools, Reedley Mennonite Brethren Church or Palm Village Retirement Community.
