Leta Jean Upton
Leta Jean Upton
1944–2024

Leta Jean Upton woke up in the arms of Jesus on Monday, April 1, 2024. She was born in Le Flore, Oklahoma, on April 11, 1944, to Oliver and Annie Upton. Leta was the baby of the family and spoiled by her brothers Herman and Jay and sisters Faye and Iona. When Leta was about six years old, she and her family headed west and settled in the small farming community of Dinuba, California. Leta graduated from Dinuba Union High School in the spring of 1962. Upon graduation, she began her career as a bookkeeper for various businesses in the area. In 1969, Leta started working for Dinuba Rexall Drugs. She dearly loved that job and all of the lifelong friends that she made during her 34 years of employment there. When the drug store closed in 2003, Leta moved to Roseburg, Oregon, to be near her two sisters and their families. She worked for a short time before retiring. Leta loved flowers, cooking, sewing, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, word searches, reading, and traveling. But most of all, she loved the Lord and spending time with her family. When Leta was just 16 years old, she began teaching Sunday school to pre-schoolers at the Delft Church of God. She impacted hundreds of lives with her sharing of the gospel for over 40 years. In fact, many of Leta’s former students are now serving as pastors and Sunday school teachers. A Facebook post from one of them read, “My pre-school Sunday school teacher went to heaven this morning. Even as a 4-year-old, I could sense the effort she put into her lesson, classroom, and activities. I knew she loved us. She was a teacher in a small church, in a small town where I don’t recall her ever being brought onto the stage in recognition. She brought herself low so that others could rise. And in doing so, she found great joy in the young souls in whom she was investing. That was enough for her. She’ll never know how much her love and teaching helped to establish a sure foundation for this future Jesus-following pastor to build upon. The body of Christ will always be in need of more Sister Leta Uptons.” Leta is survived by three nephews, 12 nieces, numerous great-nephews and -nieces, cousins, her church families in California and Oregon, and special cousin, travel companion, and best friend Regina Marable of Dinuba. We will be celebrating Leta’s life and legacy in Oregon later this summer.
