Dominga Reyes Bustamante

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Dominga Bustamante. She left us on a sunny May Day, at the age of 89 years. Her passing leaves a void in our hearts that can never be filled, but her memory will live on through the countless lives she touched.

Dominga Reyes Bustamante
1935–2024

Dominga was preceded by her beloved husband Cruz Bustamante Jr., her parents Dorotea and Fermin Reyes, her siblings Mike, Eva, Bessie and Simon. She is survived by her 6 children, Cruz, Belinda, Dorothy, Ron, Andrew, and Naomi. Dominga has 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and many other cherished family members and friends.

As a child, Dominga’s family migrated to California to work in agriculture, settling in Dinuba. She attended Dinuba schools, where she met her high school sweetheart and husband Cruz Bustamante Jr. They moved to San Joaquin, Calif. and there, Dominga blossomed into a social and cultural icon. She saw the need for community action and stepped up by volunteering to help families obtain Social Security benefits and support as a Vista Volunteer. She drove the elderly to Fresno for appointments, as well as interacted with local city and county officials and boards to ensure that the citizens of San Joaquin and the surrounding communities were given the fair and equitable rights they deserved as a CSO Organizer. She was San Joaquin Teen Club advisor and teen anxiety first responder, a law enforcement interdiction advocate, a bilingual instructional aide, a certificated healthcare provider, and social/political activist. Dominga also served as the unofficial “Welcome Host” to new Hindu/Sikh families moving to the area and served her faith as a Catechism teacher in San Joaquin and Fresno. Dominga received an award from the California Latina Leaders in Action with a “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2002. It was presented as recognition of “her long-term involvement in community empowerment and advocacy. “She also received the “Bishop’s Catechist Appreciation Certificate” from the Diocese of Fresno, which recognized her for more than 30 years of service as a faithful minister of God’s Word.

In her retirement years, Dominga stayed active by volunteering for the Fresno Food Bank, continuing as a Catechism teacher, maintaining her cactus garden, reading the latest Karen Kingsbury novel, and giving her time to friends and family. Her home served as the family gathering spot for holidays, birthdays, and tamale-making parties. She also became an accomplished seamstress and quilter and made sure each grandchild had their own special, handmade blanket.

Dominga was a beacon of love, kindness, and wisdom. She devoted her life to God, to her family, and community. She was always putting others before herself and her home was a blessed sanctuary of warmth and hospitality, where everyone felt welcomed and loved.

A funeral service has been arranged in her hometown of Dinuba and she will be buried at Smith Mountain Cemetery.

Dominga’s legacy of love, strength, and compassion will continue to guide us and keep her spirit alive in our hearts. Mom, you will be forever missed and eternally loved.
