Reedley College football hits the road in bid for 2-0 start

Tigers use balanced offense to pull away late and down Shasta College in season opener, quarterback Stevenson throws for 240 yards

REEDLEY –The undefeated 2023 Reedley College football team makes its first road-trip of the regular season Saturday, Sept. 9, when they travel to Hayward to face the Chabot College Gladiators at 6 p.m.

Chabot opened the season with a road game Sept. 2 at Feather River College, losing by a 32-13 score.

Reedley, ranked 26th in the preseason rankings, rolled up a total of 418 yards in a 35-21 win over the Shasta College Knights Saturday at Reedley High School Stadium’s Sal Gonzalez Field.

DJ Stevenson passed for 240 yards and a touchdown in the Tiger victory. He also ran for 39 yards and the go-ahead touchdown.

The contest was still in doubt until early in the fourth quarter when Contae Cason (Tampa, Fla.)  scored on a 14-yard run to increase the lead to 35-14. Cason finished with 69 yards on 10 carries.

Reedley was six of 11 on third and fourth down plays, converting on both of its fourth down attempts.

The Tigers opened the scoring midway in the opening quarter on a 4-yard run by Nick Osho (British Columbia). Shasta tied the contest in the second quarter on a 66-yard scoring drive.

Reedley regained the lead with 57.6 seconds remaining in the first half as Stevenson scored from a yard out, capping a nine play, 71-yard drive. The Tigers got into the red zone on a 17-yard run by the sophomore on a quarterback draw.

In the second half, Shasta tied the contest on a 36-yard play when Kyle Pennington caught the pass between three Tiger defenders.

It took five plays and less than three minutes for the Tigers to regain the lead on a 71-yard drive. Cason had a 35-yard run to the Shasta 2 before Stevenson scored from a yard out with eight minutes left in the third quarter.

Denon Fagan later intercepted a Shasta pass at the Tiger 5. Eight plays later, Stevenson connected with Ron Vann (San Diego) for a 42-yard touchdown. The play before, Stevenson fumbled the snap from center, recovered and found Osho for a 24-yard gain.

Shasta scored with 4.2 seconds remaining to create the final margin.

Volleyball team collects first win of season

Reedley College will take an overall record of 1-4 into the Wednesday, Sept. 13 Central Valley Conference opener at Merced College after defeating Contra Costa College in the Monterey Peninsula College Classic last week for the team’s first victory of the season.

On Sept. 1, The Tigers swept the Comets by scores of 25-12, 25-22, 25-18 after a 25-14, 16-25, 25-22, 25-13 loss to tournament host Monterey Peninsula earlier in the day.

Reedley College hosted its home opener the day before, and were swept by an undefeated Lassen College squad 25-19, 25-12, 25-15. The Cougars (9-0) were led by 12 kills and 10 digs from sophomore outside hitter Presley Burrows in the Aug. 31 match at RC gym.

Merced College has started the new season 0-3 with losses to Modesto, Sacramento City and Los Medanos on the road or neutral courts. Following the Merced match, the Tigers will host West Hills-Coalinga in a scheduled 6 p.m. start time.
