REEDLEY – It may be just the conference opener, but this Saturday’s Reedley College at Contra Costa College football game in San Pablo has to be the game of the year for both teams.
The 1 p.m. contest on Oct. 14 matches the ninth-ranked Comets and the 13th-ranked Tigers matches a 5-0 Contra Costa squad and a 4-1 Reedley squad. Other conference openers are Fresno City (2-3) at College of the Sequoias (3-2) and Modesto (2-3) at Sacramento City (3-2).
Each Northern California team had last Saturday off. Reedley College Rob Hartenfels called the Oct. 14 matchup the Valley Bowl on social media and even had an intersquad scrimmage last Thursday.
Reedley and Contra Costa have played both Chabot and Santa Rosa Junior College. Reedley defeated Chabot 34-26 and SRJC 29-21 while Contra Costa won 23-7 and 18-13, respectively.
Comet Quarterback Zac Switzer averages 245.2 yards per game passing while Reedley’s DJ Stevenson averages 167.2. On the ground, Reedley’s Contae Cason leads the conference at 570 yards and seven touchdowns while Contra Costa’s Rahsaan Woodland averages 35.4 yards and just two touchdowns.
There are six 5-0 teams in the state and five 4-1 squads.
Acequia takes medalist honors for RC golf
Ho Hum! Chalk up another second place finish for the Reedley College Tiger women’s golf team on Oct. 5 in the fifth Big 8 Conference tournament in Stockton Thursday at the Reserve at Spanos Park.
Ethel Asequia took medalist honors from the eight teams with a round of 75. Other Reedley scores were Meghan Hanson with an 85, Ava Arrendondo with an 86, Gabrielle Jasso with an 88, Melanie Jasso with a 90 and Miya Zolkowslie with a 95.
The Tigers finished with a team score of 334, six strokes behind Modesto’s 327. Other teams were host San Joaquin Delta with a 374, Napa with a 366 and Sierra with a 351. Taft and Fresno City did not have enough golfers to field a team.
After competing in the State Preview Tournament at Hunter Ranch CC Sunday and Monday, Oct. 8-9, the Tigers head to Modesto for the next conference tournament on Thursday, Oct. 12.
Women’s volleyball drops 2 straight sets decisions
Two losses last week dropped the Reedley College women’s volleyball team to 2-7 in Valley Conference play.

The Tigers fell 3-0 on Oct. 4 and 3-0 at Porterville on Friday. No statistics were available from either match. Set scores were 25-13, 25-17 and 25-19 to COS and 25-15, 25-12, 25-20 at Porterville.
The Tigers are at their home court, Paul Mitchell Court, twice this week, hosting Taft at 5 p.m. on Oct. 11 and entertaining Merced at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13.
Women’s soccer salvages tie at Fresno City College
Thanks to nine saves by goalie Areal Galvan, the 17th ranked Reedley College women’s soccer team battled the 10th ranked Fresno City College Rams to a scoreless tie on Oct. 3 in Fresno.
Fresno outshot the Tigers 12-3 in the match. Reedley is tied for second with Sequoias with a 4-2-1 record, two and a half games behind 7-0 Clovis.
The Tigers played at Madera on Oct. 10 and will travel to Taft on Friday, Oct. 13 for 12:30 p.m. contest. On Tuesday, Oct. 17, Reedley played at Merced in a conference road contest.
