Reedley boys wrestling finishes 4th at TCC

Wrestling teams prep for section divisionals this week, Division I boys and D-II girls tourneys start Feb. 9

KINGSBURG – Reedley High’s varsity wrestling team collected eight top-four finishes, led by 108-pound champion Cristian Bustos, and finished fourth out of nine schools competing last week at the Tri-County Conference tournament.

The Pirates scored 135 points on Feb. 2 at Kingsburg High School to trail champion Kingsburg (239), Kerman (147) and Selma (138). Immanuel High had three top-four finishers and placed eighth with 60 points.

Freshman Bustos (21-12 on the season) was Reedley’s lone champion as he won twice, including a third period pin of Washington Union’s Carlos Navarro in the finals. For the girls, the Pirates had a weight class champ in freshman Kenzie Herrera (27-7) at 120 pounds after Herrera posted two pins.

The Pirates boys also had four second place finishers in sophomore Daniel Baker (6-5) at 126 pounds, senior Izaac Olivas (15-8) at 138, senior David Arroyo (27-10) at 144 and senior Demetrius Vargas (18-6) at 150. Freshman Angel Zeferino Bruno (113 pounds) was a third place finisher for Reedley while fourth place finishers were freshman Jonah Rusca (120) and sophomore Logan Rodriguez (175).

For Immanuel, sophomore Ethan Zuniga (19-14 at 113 pounds) and senior Jacob Rios (15-7 at 165) had second place finishes while senior heavyweight Paul Shanor (4-2) finished in fourth place.

Reedley and Sanger West’s boys wrestling teams will compete in the Central Section Division IV tournament at Chavez High in Delano on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9-10, with top qualifiers advancing on to the Section Masters meet in Fresno. Immanuel boys will compete in the Division V sectionals on Feb. 9-10 at Farmersville High School.

For the girls, Reedley and Sanger West along with Dinuba will compete at the section Division II tournament at Morro Bay High on Feb. 9-10.

Sanger wrestling teams compete at divisional meets in Visalia

Sanger High’s varsity wrestlers will be competing at Central Section Division II boys and Division I qualifying tournaments in Visalia this weekend as they attempt to advance to the Section Masters Meet in Fresno on Feb. 16-17.

The Apaches boys will compete in the D-II qualifier on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9-10, at Redwood High in Visalia. Matches begin at noon on Friday, and resume Saturday at 10 a.m. with semifinals at 11 a.m. and championship finals at 4 p.m. Top Sanger wrestlers entering the postseason are senior David Gonzales (24-11 at 126 pounds), junior Brandon Gamino (26-11 at 120) and junior Tirso Jimenez IV (18-8 at 165).

Sanger’s girls are at the D-I qualifiers at Golden West High on Feb. 9-10. Friday’s matches begin at noon,  with Saturday’s championship semifinals at 10 a.m. and finals bouts set for 2 p.m.

Dinuba High’s boys will compete at the Section Division I tournament starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 at North High in Bakersfield. Championship finals are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
