SANGER – Track and field athletes from Sanger, Reedley and Dinuba used the spring holiday break to continue their postseason preparation and improve their marks by participating in the annual Sanger Easter Classic meet.

The meet, held March 26 at Dodson Field in Sanger, featured six first place performances by athletes from those schools. In addition, two new meet record times were established in both sprint medley relay events covering 1600 meters.

Host Sanger High’s boys team of sophomore Kayden McGrew, junior Aaron Vilanova, sophomore Robert Topete and senior Daniel Galvez clocked a meet-record 3 minutes, 47.51 seconds to beat out Monache High’s quartet by nearly five seconds. Also setting a new meet record was the SMR 1600 girls varsity team from Liberty-Madera Ranchos (time of 4:24.81).

Apaches senior Atianna Marquez cleared 11 feet, six inches to win the girls pole vault, coming within an inch of her personal best height. Freshman Anthony Rubio set a PR of 10:10.87 in the boys 3200 to finish second and fellow frosh Caleb DeLong took second in the high jump at 6-1. DeLong’s best mark of 6-4 is 15trh best in California and ties the freshman class school record of Cole Herron.

Dinuba High senior Avril Martinez was a double winner at the meet, sweeping both girls varsity hurdles events. She posted a PR time of 15.48 seconds in the 100 meters and won the 300 in 45.26. Senior Angel Sanchez had a PR time of 15.75 seconds in the boys 110 high hurdles. Emperors senior Julian Ramirez posted season-best marks while finishing fifth in the shot put (50-10.75) and third in the discus (174-8).

Reedley High sophomore Mauricio Herrera won the boys 3200 in a PR time of 10:09.55, highlighting a strong showing by Pirate runners. Junior Brett Mitchell finished third in 10:15.51 while sophomore Luike Mitchell placed fifth in a PR 10:347.26. Reedley girls’ 4×100 relay team of Sienna Ramos, A’aliyah Matlock, Real Morales and Rianna Quintero finished fifth in 55.70 seconds.

Immanuel High sent a limited contingent to the Sanger meet, but the 4×800 relay team of Lexi Schartman, Clara Riddle, Sara Larger and Gaby Ramirez won their race in a time of 9:47.42. The boys 4×800 relay team of Reid Bishel, Koen Enszx, Noah Stumpfhauer and Carter Lorenzo placed fifth in 8:49.01.

League and conference mini-meets continued earlier this week, with Immanuel and Reedley competing at Central Valley Christian in Visalia in a Tri-County Conference gathering on April 3 while Sanger hosts other County Metro Athletic Conference rivals at Dodson Field that same day. Dinuba, meanwhile, travels to Lemoore for a West Yosemite League tri-meet with the Tigers and Tulare Union on April 3 while Sanger West High was in Fresno for a North Yosemite League meet at Sunnyside High track.
