Tigers baseball rolls to big win at first place Fresno City College before dropping home-and-home games to close out three-game conference series

REEDLEY — Reedley College’s softball team won two of three games last week, solidifying its top-four status in the Central Valley Conference standings.

The Tigers (18-12, 8-6) split a pair of CVC contests in Visalia on April 9 against College of the Sequoias, posting a 1-0 shutout victory before being blanked 4-0 in the nightcap. On April 11, Reedley pounded out 21 hits in a 17-0 road drubbing of Taft College to remain two games in the loss column behind third place Merced College.

Reedley High product Trinity Sanchez improved to 7-4 on the season with a five-hit complete game effort against COS. She struck out five and worked around three walks, and the Tigers collected the game’s only run in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Abigelle Buchanan (Liberty Ranch HS, Galt). In the nightcap, RC managed just four hits against the Giants’ Grace Chojnacki.

Six players collected multiple hits in the rout of Taft, led by Orange Cove’s Anahi Castillo (4-for-4, three-run home run, six RBI and three runs scored) and Reedley Middle College HS grad Alexa Valdez (4-for-5, three runs, two RBI). Hope Ficher (El Diamante, Visalia) had three hits and two runs driven in while three other players had two hits apiece.

Reedley pitchers Alexis Wright (Tulare Western) and Mia Barbosa (Immanuel) combined to limit Taft to just one hit. The Tigers play a CVC doubleheader at Porterville College on April 16, then travel to San Jose City College for a non-conference twinbill on Friday April 19. On Saturday, April 20, the Tigers host single games against Bakersfield College (10 a.m.) and Monterey Peninsula (2 p.m.)

Five-run inning sparks baseball road win in Fresno

Reedley College (21-12, 10-8 CVC) scored all 15 of its runs in the final six innings, starting with a five-run rally in the fifth to cruise to a 15-1 win over first place Fresno City College on April 9 at Euless Park. Mike Collins (Bullard, Fresno) had three hits and drove in two runs while Jonathan Callison (Tulare Western) had three RBI and was one of three Tigers with four hits.

The Rams (25-8, 14-4) then captured the final two games of the series, winning 13-5 in Reedley on April 11 and then cruised to a 12-2 win in Fresno the following day. The two teams closed out a four-game set on April 15 with a single game at Chukchansi Park in Fresno.

Fresno City scored seven runs in the opening inning of its win at Reedley, finishing with 15 hits to 12 for the Tigers. Nolan Keene had three hits for RC. In the third game back in Fresno, wiped out a 2-1 deficit with six runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Dusty Vela (Pleasant Valley, Chico) had two of the Tigers’ four hits.

Reedley plays a road game at College of the Sequoias on April 17, then hosts Porterville College (2 p.m. Thursday, April 18) and Merced College (1 p.m. Saturday, April 20)  in CVC contests at Tigers diamond.
