REEDLEY — The spring sports season came to an end over the weekend for Reedley College, as both the baseball and softball teams lost on the road in the California Community College Athletic Association Northern California regional playoffs.

The Tigers’ softball squad took host San Jose City College to the limit, forcing a decisive third game after rebounding from a May 3 opening loss to post a 3-1 win on May 5. That game was delayed a day by rain in the Bay Area. But the Jaguars (30-9) closed out RC’s 23-18 campaign with 5-0 shutout win to advance to the NorCal quarter finals round.

Stats were unavailable for either of Saturday’s games, but the No. 12 seed Tigers battled fifth-seeded San Jose City from the start, losing in the bottom of the seventh by a 5-4 score in the opening game on May 3. A single by the Jaguars’ Malia Venegas plated the winning run.

Reedley pitcher Trinity Sanchez (Reedley High) worked a complete game, scattering eight hits and striking out 10 while walking just one. Celine Ramos (Clovis East High) went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs knocked in. Hope Ficher (El Diamante, Visalia) had two hits and an RBI while Anahi Castillo (Orange Cove) also knocked in a run.

West Valley slugs way past Tigers baseball

The host West Valley College Vikings (32-10) pounded out 27 runs on 26 hits, including three home runs, to sweep Reedley College (24-18) by scores of 16-4 (May 3) and 11-8 (May 5) in CCCAA NorCal regional play. The 22nd-seeded Tigers collected 21 hits on their own right but were unable to shut down the potent West Valley offense.

Brody Block and Mike Collins homered in the opening loss while Dusty Vela had three hits. In the second game that was postponed a day by rain, the Tigers erupted for six runs in the first inning but gave the advantage back by allowing six runs in the third. Collins and Garrett Garfield (four RBI) homered while Vela finished with three hits.
