Reedley College men’s golf places second in state

Defending champion Tigers finish eight shots back of College of the Canyons, which captures its 11th California title

GOLETA, CALIF. – Reedley College made a strong bid for a second consecutive California Community College Athletic Association men’s golf championship earlier this month, but in the end couldn’t get past College of the Canyons.

The Cougars fired a 31-over-par combined team score of 751 over two rounds on May 12-13, pulling away from a one-shot edge to defeat the Tigers (759) by eight strokes at Sandpiper Golf Club. Host Santa Barbara City College finished third with a 769 score, followed by Napa Valley (771) and Fresno City College (773).

Reedley’s scoring in the state meet was highlighted by freshman Ricky Sullivan (El Capitan, Merced), who fired 74 and 75 for a combined score of five-over-par 149.

Sullivan was followed by sophomore Blake Contente (Clovis West) with 73-78 – 151, sophomore Chase Bird (Buhach Colony, Atwater) with 77-76 – 153, freshman Eliot Vidal (Nimes, France) with 74-80 – 154, and sophomore Ludwig Klingspor (Vallentune, Sweden) at 77-78 -155. Freshman Johan Bjorken (Hudiksvall, Sweden) had a non-scoring 79-77 – 156.

Canyons was led in scoring by Paul Grimonpon and Owen Crockett each with 146, and the individual medalist honors went to Sierra College’s Kyler Ostrom (.70-74 – 144).

Rounding out this year’s Reedley roster were freshmen Eli Borsch (Sanger High), Jhett Kirk (Exeter), Philip Papanickolas (Redwood, Visalia) and Rayden Diamaano (Sierra Pacific, Hanford). The Tigers rolled into the state meet with a dominating victory at the NorCal Regionals in Woodlake on May 5.
