GILROY – Coming off a three game losing streak, the Reedley College men’s basketball team tried to find some kind of spark against Gavilan College to end the funk.
This time, the Tigers wound up growling rather than yawning, as they rolled to an 81-43 non-conference victory against the Rams on Nov. 13. With the victory, Reedley improves to 2-3 overall at press time.
Reedley wasted no time in playing games with Gavilan, as they headed into the locker room with a 43-14 lead at the half. And while the Rams made a valiant charge towards the end, the Tigers never relinquished the lead.
Freshman Nasseff Lubowa (Los Angeles) led three Reedley players in double digit scoring figures. Lubowa led all scorers with 17 points and CJ Kornegay, Jr. (Wilmington, NC) collected 10 points. Lubowa leads Reedley in scoring, averaging nearly 19.4 points per game in this young season.
Playing his first game of the season, redshirt freshman Luke Machnik scored 13 points off the bench for the Tigers. Overall, 13 Tigers, with the exception of one player, found their way into the scoring column.
Reedley’s (2-3) next two opponents are a road game at Napa Valley and a home contest against Canada before diving into tournament play Dec. 4-6.
Lady Tigers take win into tournament play
The Reedley College women’s basketball team managed to clutch victory out of the jaws of defeat to stun Bakersfield College.
Coming back from a 10-point deficit to start the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers scraped and clawed their way to an emotional 65-62 non-conference victory against the Renegades at Paul Mitchell Court on Nov. 15. By the time Reedley took their first lead midway through the final quarter, Bakersfield was already finished.
Reedley’s Raquel Cortez led the charge, scoring 22 points on 9-20 shooting. Despite missing 9 of her 11 shots from the field, Taylor Sutherland (Roosevelt, Fresno) sunk all 9 of her free throws to finish with 13 points. And Taylor Rombaoa (Clovis East) finished with 14 points. Rayonna Andrews crashed the boards, pulling down 11 rebounds.
The Lady Tigers (3-1) now get ready for some tournament ball for the next few days. Reedley ventures down to San Diego City College to compete in the San Diego CC-Cb Knights Invitational from Nov. 20-23. The Tigers open up play against Imperial Valley on Nov. 20.
