FOWLER – Community members can now throw their hat in the ring for a chance to make decisions on future city developments.

Until Nov. 25, residents of Fowler may submit an application to serve on the city’s planning commission. The city aims to fill one vacancy on the commission to get it operating back at full capacity with five members.

The Fowler Planning Commission plays a key role in the city’s development, as all new construction in the city is generally subject to the commission review with the exception of minor expansion of residential structures and interior remodels.

The planning commission conducts public meetings and makes decisions on project applications including use permits, variances, parcel maps and design review for residential, commercial and industrial projects. It also makes recommendations to the city council on amendments to the general plan, zoning ordinance and subdivision maps.

“If you’re passionate about shaping your community’s future through land use and development decisions including use permits, variances, parcel maps and design review for residential, commercial and industrial projects, you’re invited to apply!” said the city in a Facebook post.

Those interested can submit an application online at www.fowlercity.org, on the city clerk’s page under the “Government” tab, or in person at the city clerk’s office at 128 S. 5th Street. Paper copies can be obtained at city hall which shares the same address.

Applicants must reside within the incorporated Fowler city limits or within the adopted sphere of influence.

The planning commission meets on the first Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the city council chambers. According to the city’s website, applications will be considered by the city council when current officeholders’ terms expire, and the commissioner will be appointed by the mayor with consent of the city council.
